Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff and Bedouine collaborate on newly released song
When it first surfaced in 1972, Big Star’s “Thirteen” served as a stirring snapshot of adolescence. As reimagined in a new cover by Bedouine’s Azniv Korkejian, Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield, and Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Alynda Segarra, the song could double as a reflection on those simpler, pre-COVID days when dances, public pools and rock concerts were still available to all.
The trio first discussed recording “Thirteen” early on a 2018 tour. “We threw the idea around of doing a song together but weren’t sure what,” Korkejian said in a press release. “I was backstage in Columbia, Missouri when I realized it was the anniversary of Big Star’s ’93 reunion show that had also taken place in Columbia. I was fiddling around with the song in my dressing room when Katie and Alynda walked in. Suddenly I remembered there were 3 verses to split up. We played it as an homage that night and every night after.”
